This week we're celebrating Zero Waste Week! Why don't you give it a try?
Zero Waste Week is a campaign running from the 6th till 9th September, raising awareness about the environmental impact of waste. The campaign offers tips on reducing the use of plastics, recycling, food waste, saving water and their impact on climate crisis. It was created to help individuals and organisations become more waste conscious all year round.
Make your daily routine more sustainable with products that are ethically made, are plastic-free are cruelty-free.
1. Swap your plastic toothbrush with bamboo toothbrush
Millions of toothbrushes are used and disposed each year, amounting to approximately thousands of tonnes of landfill each year. The plastic they're made of won't break down in our lifetime. Nor within the lifetime of our children. On a global scale, it's a huge problem.
A Brisbane dentist invented these bamboo brushes as a simple solution to a massive problem. These toothbrushes are made from bamboo, a natural cellulose fibre; the handles are biodegradable, environmentally sustainable, and do not pollute the environment. The incredible growth and self-renewing ability of bamboo mean that deforestation is not necessary either.
2. Switch to a more sustainable makeup remover by ditching single-use wipes
Single-use wipes are convenient for busy lifestyles, but they are very wasteful. Imagine the piles of all single-use wipes that all women you know used this month? All these wipes end up in landfills and take years to break down. It's time to make a change.
These reusable organic cotton makeup remover pads are an amazing eco-friendly alternative to your single-use makeup wipes.
They are perfect for everyday cleansing and makeup removal. They can be washed in the machine up from 40°C to 60°C and tumbled dry on low heat. They are 100% biodegradable so can be put into a compost bin at the end of life.
3. Use eco-friendly kitchen sponges
These eco-friendly biodegradable, reusable kitchen sponges are made from wood pulp. They are environmentally friendly, reusable and fully biodegradable. They absorb more water - up to 10 times their weight. They can be used in the kitchen and bathroom. How to get rid of it when the sponge is no longer useful in cleaning your dishes? It will biodegrade even in your garden or your home compost. If your council collects food waste for composting, you can also put the sponge in the food waste bin.
4. Use biodegradable coconut kitchen scourers
These biodegradable kitchen scrubbers are great for special tasks! They are perfect for removing hard grease, all kinds of stains, and food from your plates and pots without leaving any scratches. When the coconut dish scrubber is no longer scrubbing your dirty dishes well, you can use it as a soap dish to put the soap block on. Or you can give it to your dog to play with it. As long as the scrubber lands on a patch of grass, it will biodegrade. If you want to speed up the breaking down of the scrubber, simply bury it underground or put it in your home compost. You can also set the coconut scrubber in the food waste bin.
5. If you're a pet owner, use plant-based dog poo bags
These dog poo bags are fully biodegradable and compostable because they are not made of plastic. Instead, they are made from plant-based material - cornstarch. Don't worry; they won't leak! They are entirely safe to use as they are 100% leakproof. When you're done cleaning after your dog, just place it in home compost with your four-pawed friend's poo.
