Chocolate Kindness - These Vegan Treats Are Out Of This World
13 Sept 2022 by Agi Kaja

Kind Hearted Chocs is a small company creating amazing vegan chocolate you won't find anywhere else in the UK. Founded by Jess in 2021, this business is a one-woman operation. Jess makes everything herself from start to finish. All chocolates are handmade in her home in Manchester.

Jess has always enjoyed creating delicious treats and sharing them with friends and family. One day, she decided to turn her passion into a business and start making luxury vegan chocolates, including the most beautiful hand-painted bonbons filled with unique flavours.

There is no other vegan chocolatier in the UK making luxury dairy-free chocs which look just as beautiful as they taste.

How did it all start, Jess?

I have been vegan for four years now, and I was a complete chocolate addict before I went vegan. The idea of my business came to me as I was underwhelmed by all the vegan chocolates I had tried and saw there was a gap in the market to fill for chocolate which tastes as good as dairy chocs. I spent months learning how to make chocolate by watching YouTube videos and reading books, and then I launched my business in April 2021. My mission is to show that chocolate can still taste delicious without the suffering of innocent animals.

What makes your vegan chocolate unique?

I focus on creating not only delicious flavours and fillings but also chocolates which look incredible. I love thinking about someone receiving a box as a gift and seeing how stunning the chocs look when they first open the box!

I have a unique salted caramel recipe which has been a staple since launching KHC. I have received so much feedback from my customers saying it is the best caramel they have ever had. Whenever I create something new, I focus on making it unique and original, which you couldn't find anywhere else in the UK.

Unlike other vegan chocolate you will find in the shops, we use coverture chocolate instead of compound chocolate. This means our chocolate is of higher quality and tastes so much nicer as it contains a much higher percentage of cocoa butter!

When I first launched KHC, I was just making selection boxes of 12 and 24 chocs, but I have expanded the range considerably since March this year. I now also sell 100g large bars in 6 flavours, cappuccino truffles, peanut butter balls and snack bars filled with Biscoff and salted caramel. In May, I launched our Ferrer-no Roche truffles and snack bars which have now become a customer favourite.

How do you make your incredible chocolate goodies?

Everything is handmade by myself by using various vegan ingredients, including butter, cream and, of course, chocolate! Depending on what design I am going for, I either hand-paint the mould or use a spray gun with coloured cocoa butter. I then create the shells using tempered chocolate and fill them with various flavours, including orange, peppermint, caramel, hazelnut praline and many more. I create videos making the chocolates from start to finish on our IG and Tiktok page, which people really enjoy seeing.

What eco-friendly packaging do you use for your products?

I have incorporated more sustainable packaging into the brand over the past six months. Instead of using plastic trays for all of our boxes, we are now using more paper insert trays along with recyclable boxes and recycled cardboard postal boxes. Our snack bars are packaged in biodegradable wrappers.

What vegan chocolate bars and bonbons will launch at The Vegan Kind?

Vegan Salted Caramel bonbons in boxes of 6, 12 and 24. Along with large 100g bars in mint, orange and honeycomb. You will also find vegan snack bars filled with salted caramel and Biscoff (the same size as a mars bar).

What are your next big plans?

Last year, I launched our first advent calendars, which sold out in 2 hours, which was an incredibly exciting time, so this year I am going to make three times the amount! They will be available to pre-order at the end of September and will have six different flavours. Along with this, I will be launching our first vegan Christmas chocolate collection in November, which will include festive flavours and designs!

Why is vegan chocolate better for the planet?

There are no innocent animals harmed in the process, and less greenhouse gas is produced due to there being no dairy involved!

How can we convince more people to go plant-based?

I believe every vegan can play an important role in helping others turn vegan. We need to show people that veganism isn't boring and restrictive, and you won't sacrifice the enjoyment in your life. We need to break the vegan stereotypes, and every single vegan can do this by educating others around them. Whether it's me showing that vegan chocolates can be delicious, whether it's fitness coaches showing that you can still be strong and healthy or whether it's your average vegan cooking a meal for their family and friends and showing them how delicious vegan food really can be. We can all play our own roles and lead by example. If we can do this in a "non-preachy" way, similar to how earthling Ed approaches his work, I think we have a good chance of convincing people to go vegan and make a positive impact on the world.
