Restaurateur and award-winning food writer, Gizzi Erskine shares her top 5 tips on creating plant-based meals with meat-free alternatives. Gizzi has created an array of dishes inspired by her travels using meat alternatives; pulled pork and chicken from Swiss brand Eatplanted.
Gizzi said: “Making and eating food should be a complete experience, so the dishes I’ve created aim to transport people to new levels of tasty. Eatplanted is perfect to use as the 5 ingredient products and insane protein levels mean you really don’t compromise with meat-free dishes and what’s more, it's a sustainable source of protein”.
The top five tips for creating the ultimate plant-based dishes are:
Choose quality ‘meat’ that isn’t full of additives and fillers - the best around are made from pea, oat or corn protein.
Alternative ‘meat’ is great at absorbing flavours so letting the ‘meat’ sit in your favourite marinades and sauces to be in for a tasty treat.
The texture is everything with alternative meats, so look for super realistic fibres so it’s a true imitation of animal meat - the result is tastier dishes that you can’t tell the difference.
Sustainable choices are important. Whether you are plant-based or flexitarian and enjoy animal meat some of the time, choosing food that you know where it comes from is important not just for the planet but also for health.
‘Cuts’ of alternative meat can make the difference between a mediocre meal and a great one. There are loads of meat alternatives that have different cuts - it’s not just about chicken pieces so get adventurous with pulled pork versions, doner ‘meat’ and strips.
